- Dear Church Family,
On Wednesday, April 15, the FBC Coronavirus Response Team made the decision to suspend church activities and keep the church office closed through the end of May. This decision was made prayerfully and out of concern for our neighbors, church members, and vulnerable people in our community. We looked at hopeful statistics from the Oregon Health Authority showing signs that efforts to “flatten the curve” and minimize the spread of the virus and reduce the strain on hospitals is working. This group is meeting every two weeks, and will continue to stay updated with facts from local health authorities. Should the opportunity arise to meet again sooner than anticipated, we will be prepared.
In the meantime, here are a few ways you can connect with your church family:
— Continue to send your tithes and offerings to the church. Even though the church is currently serving God in a different way, your financial support continues to help the work of the Kingdom to carry on. We continue to organize online gatherings and create connections during these often lonely times. Youngchurch is still meeting via Zoom every Wednesday night. HOPE continues to distribute food to people who are in need. Your support is vital right now. Checks can be mailed to: First Baptist Church of Oregon City, P.O. Box 1686, Oregon City, OR, 97045.
— We are releasing a worship podcast every Sunday morning around 1 a.m. Whenever you wake up on Sunday, there will be an opportunity for you to hear God’s word, pray, and sing along with your church family. It’s also easily shared with friends and neighbors. Here are links that will work on your phone or computer for the podcast:
Apple Podcasts: bit.ly/1bcapple
Google Podcasts: j.mp/googlepod
— Every Sunday at 11:30 a.m. we meet on Zoom for Coffee Hour. Come join us for conversation! A link will be in your Friday email. If you don't receive our Friday emails, please contact the church office and request to be added to the mailing list.
— Every first and third Sunday, we will be celebrating the Lord’s Table via Zoom. On the first and third Sundays of the month—like usual—we will use the beginning of our weekly Zoom Coffee Hour at 11:30 a.m. to take the bread and cup together.
— On Facebook and Instagram, Pastor John and Melissa have been doing Bible readings and prayer Monday through Saturday.
— We have started a Prayer Shawl ministry, and have several shawls ready to go. If you are in need of some extra comfort right now, please do not hesitate to contact Pastor John, Melissa, or the church office, and we will get a hand-made shawl to you. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Melissa.
While many people are frustrated with the restrictions, it is important to remember one of our roles as the church—as God’s people: we are part of God’s on-going redeeming work on planet Earth, showing the self-sacrificing love of Christ. We can continue to pray for and connect with each other over the phone and through electronic means; we do the same for our neighbors. This is an important time for the witness of Christians in our community.
Grace and Peace,
The FBC Coronavirus Response Team
